New Mexico Security Guard Requirements


New Mexico mandates that all security guards be registered and or licensed with the state. There are three levels which security guards can register under.

Below are the requirements for the three levels of security guard licensing.

Level 1 Registration requirements:

At least eighteen years of age
Good moral character
Successfully completed an examination to be administered by the department
Not been convicted of a felony or an offense involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found to have violated professional ethical standards
Completed a department approved training program prior to being placed on a guard post for the first time as a level one security guard
Employed by a private patrol company under the direct supervision of a licensed private patrol operator, a level three security guard or a private patrol operations manager
Level 2 Registration requirements:

At least eighteen years of age
Good moral character
Possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent
Successfully completed an examination to be administered by the department
Not been convicted of a felony or an offense involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found to have violated professional ethical standards
Completed a department approved training program prior to being placed on a guard post for the first time as a level two security guard
Employed by a private patrol company under the direct supervision of a licensed private patrol operator, a level three security guard or a private patrol operations manager
Level 3 Registration requirements:

At least twenty one years of age
Good moral character
Possesses a high school diploma or its equivalent
Successfully completed an examination to be administered by the department
Not been convicted of a felony or an offense involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found to have violated professional ethical standards
Completed a department approved training program prior to being placed on a guard post for the first time as a level three security guard
