Chain of Custody Awareness

Chain of custody means tracking who handled evidence, when it was handled, and where it was stored. Security officers should generally avoid handling evidence unless directed or required.

If evidence must be handled:

• Wear gloves if available.
• Minimize contact.
• Document who handled it.
• Document time, location, and reason.
• Turn it over to law enforcement or authorized personnel.
